the bub has begun abc swimming lessons at the pool near our place. she used to love it at the y when she was 6-8 months old. now she wants to cry because she's the only one in the class and the swimming instructor (who shall be referred to as "the bearded lady" from hereon in") is totally full-on and a bit frightening and bub doesn't know who the heck she is or why she's trying to get her away from her daddy. i'm glad the bearded lady changed her tactics at swimming lessons today. she was much kinder and has decided that all bub needs is time. to this end, she walked up and down the pool with bub clinging to her with the saddest face in the world, telling bub "i love you" and bouncing her. she also told me that bub's tendency to hold her crying in is going to damage her and that i should "be very careful"... while i admit to the strangeness of a 2 year old being so extremely stoic, it's also not like the bub holds any other emotion in check. she cries plenty still, has her share of whining, dancing with glee, yelling for fun and lashing out when angry. so i dunno if it's really something i should be worrying about. the bub is just a toughie - what can i say? she laughs when she falls down most of the time and she likes being scared. oh! which reminds me! i was so proud when the bub went on her first rollercoaster a couple weekends ago at the royal easter show. she was about 1/8th of an inch over the height requirement to go on with an adult, but you couldn't even see her in the seat, unless the coaster tipped. check it out!

i LOVE that photo! after she got off, she was all giggles and said she was going on again. we thought it might be a bit much, though, and headed to the carousel for a quieter ride. thanks to erika for the photos.

I think its essential that children today have a friendly and good swim instructor to guide them along. So that they will take to the hobby with delight, rather than find it a useless skill. But then again, most kids always love swimming afterall.
